The German composer and pedagogue, Carl Orff, developed an internationally recognised approach to music education which combines movement, singing, speech, listening and instrument playing. This exciting, sequential program provides an integrated approach to learning, emphasizing the joy of music-making. A variety of experience are designed to develop the child's musical ability and creative approach.
In 1928, Carl Orff and harpsichord maker Karl Maendler, built the first xylophones based on the melodic barred instruments of the Indonesian gamelan. These instruments became indispensable for teaching and the development of Orff's "Schulwerk."
Since the 1950's, the Orff-Schulwerk philosophy of music education has steadily increased in popularity and is currently being practised in 40 countries around the world. As well, the Orff-Schulwerk philosophy has become increasingly popular in music therapy.

Course Content
The children learn a wide repertoire of rhymes, chants, poems and folk songs
of their culture and, as well, are exposed to quality composed music and art
music of the highest caliber. Throughout the program, an emphasis is placed
on developing beat competency, in-tune singing and a sense of pitch.
The Orff instruments are pitched and unpitched percussion instruments specifically designed for children. They are designed as an extension of musical learning for the development of literacy, creativity and beat competency. They often provide a bridge for the child who is reluctant to experience music through singing and movement. Recorders offer another melodic channel and are often incorporated into the total Orff experience.
The Orff philosophy combines the elements of speech, rhythm, movement, dance, and song.
